Survey season has ended and winter office work has begun. Not all Katie works with is wild. This past week we were asked to help out a lost puppy. The temperatures here in North Dakota are below zero for the daily high and a puppy seeking warmth wandered into a stranger’s home. The home owners were startled and frightened of the stray dog and locked him in the bathroom. Katie and I were called to the rescue. Until his owner is found, the puppy (we are calling him Kota) is staying with us. Katie is being very motherly and showing him the ropes. Our biggest challenge is keeping up with the potty training as he is still learning. Being a puppy, he loves to chase the cats. He just can’t figure out why they don’t chase him back! Katie is very protective of the blind cat and Kota doesn’t quite understand why Katie gets mad when he tries to chase her. Katie clearly has her ‘paws’ full with our young visitor!
Now that winter is upon us, field work is limited, so Katie has taken on the job of checking our skull specimens. She makes daily rounds, no matter the weather. First the west pen, then the east pen, and lastly the garage. Today she was showing Kota how to do rounds. She also does a daily check of the new office building. She seems anxious to move into the new building. Could it be because I promised her a new bed in the office?
Katie would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a happy holiday season!
